Elizabeth Engle is Director of the F.M. Kirby Center and Program in Neurobiology at Boston Children’s Hospital, Professor of Neurology and Ophthalmology at Harvard Medical School, Investigator of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, and Associate Member of the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard. At Boston Children’s Hospital, she is a member of the Departments of Neurology, Ophthalmology and Medicine (Genetics), a member of the F.M. Kirby Neurobiology Center and the Program in Genomics, and a senior investigator for The Manton Center for Orphan Disease Research. Dr. Engle received her B.A from Middlebury College and her M.D. from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. She trained in pediatrics at Johns Hopkins, in neuropathology at Massachusetts General Hospital, and in adult and child neurology in the Longwood Neurology Training Program and at Boston Children’s Hospital. Following her residencies, she was a research fellow with Louis Kunkel, Ph.D., and later Alan Beggs, Ph.D., in the Division of Genetics at Children’s prior to establishing her own research lab in 1997. Her work has defined the human congenital cranial dysinnervation disorders and has been recognized by high-profile publications and by receipt of multiple honors, including the E. Mead Johnson Award for Research in Pediatrics from the Society for Pediatric Research, Sidney Carter Award in Child Neurology from the American Academy of Neurology, Research Award for Vision from the Alcon Institute, and the Bernard Sachs Award from the Child Neurology Society and election to the National Academy of Medicine and American Academy of Arts and Sciences. In addition to her research, Dr. Engle continues to care for patients, primarily consulting for children and adults with rare eye and facial movement disorders and other cranial nerve disorders. She teaches in both the clinical and laboratory settings, and has served on multiple committees that set the direction for neuroscience and ophthalmology research locally and nationally.<\/p>\n

Brenda joined the Engle Lab in 2015 and is responsible for managing congenital cranial dysinnervation disorders (CCDD) human subjects study protocols and the CCDD clinic. She coordinates communications between the lab, study participants, providers, and collaborators and enrolls families into our research studies. Through the CCDD clinic, she provides genetic counseling for patients affected by cranial nerve disorders and their families. Brenda received her BA in Biology from Williams College and MS in Genetic Counseling from Brandeis University. She is a licensed genetic counselor and board certified by the American Board of Genetic Counseling.<\/a><\/p>\n

Gabby joined the Engle lab in 2022 after earning her PhD from the Translational, Biology, Medicine, and Health Graduate Program at Virginia Tech, with a focus on cellular and molecular neuroscience and neuroimmunology. Her doctoral research in the lab of Dr. Michael Fox focused on the neuroimmune mechanisms underlying cortical and hippocampal inhibitory circuit changes induced by long-term brain infection with the parasite,\u00a0<\/span>Toxoplasma gondii<\/em>. As an NINDS K00 fellow in the Engle Lab, she is using transcriptomic and proteomic approaches at single cell resolution to characterize the molecular programs regulating healthy development of facial motor neuron subtypes and their growing axons and how they go awry in congenital facial weakness.<\/p>\n

Jo joined the Engle Lab in 2001 and is responsible for managing overall lab operations and finances, overseeing the processing and storing of human DNA samples, and teaching staff and trainees to conduct mutation analyses \u2013 e.g., Sanger sequencing, ddPCR, genome wide SNP analysis, and Next Generation Sequencing. She works closely with both the clinical neurogenetics and basic neuroscience research groups in the lab. Jo received her BS in Biology from Northeastern University in 2001 and her MS in Genetics from Harvard University in 2012.<\/span><\/span><\/a><\/p>\n

Tammy joined the lab in 2013 and is responsible for administrative support of Dr. Engle and lab members. For Dr. Engle, these responsibilities include calendar management and travel coordination. For the lab, they include meeting facilitation, timekeeping, reimbursement processing, mandatory reporting, institutional updates, staffing, visas, MTA\/contract execution, and website maintenance. In addition, she assists with grant applications and letters of support and recommendation. She received her BA in Women\u2019s Studies and Japanese from Wellesley College.<\/p>\n

Maya joined the lab in 2025 and is working with Dharmendra Puri, PhD to study the role of TUBB3 and KIF21A in cranial nerve development. She completed her BS at Yale, where she studied how neurons communicate within circuts to produce behavioral outputs suing the C. elegans<\/em> egg-laying system as a model.<\/p>\n

Hongdou joined the Engle Lab in 2025 after two years of postdoctoral training in the Functional Genomics Laboratory at Brigham and Women\u2019s Hospital. She earned her PhD in Genetics from Fudan University in 2021, where she identified novel pathogenic genes in short stature patients through large-scale whole-exome sequencing and functional validation. In the Engle Lab, Hongdou is pursuing her goal of becoming a clinical geneticist by investigating the genetic causes of congenital cranial dysinnervation disorders (CCDDs). Her work focuses on how non-coding genetic factors contribute to disease pathogenesis, advancing the understanding of these conditions and improving patient diagnosis.<\/p>\n

Dharmendra joined the Engle Lab in 2022 after earning his PhD in Neuroscience from the National Brain Research Centre in Manesar, India. He conducted his doctoral research in the lab of Dr. Ghosh Roy on the regulation of microtubule cytoskeleton in C. elegans<\/em> mechanosensory neuron. In the Engle Lab, his work focuses on studying the role of neuron specific \u03b2-tubulin, TUBB3, in cranial nerve development, and its interaction with the KIF21A motor protein, using cell biological and biochemical approaches. In addition, Dharmendra studies the effects of different TUBB-3 and KIF21A human knock-in mutations on cranial nerve neuroanatomy.<\/p>\n

Kirby Neurobiology Center, Boston Children's Hospital <\/strong><\/div>\n<\/div>\nElizabeth Engle is a Professor of Neurology and Ophthalmology at Harvard Medical School, an Investigator of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, and an Associate Member of the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard. At Boston Children's Hospital, she is a member of the Departments of Neurology, Ophthalmology and Medicine (Genetics), a member of the F.M. Kirby Neurobiology Center and the Program in Genomics, and a senior investigator for The Manton Center for Orphan Disease Research. Dr. Engle received her B.A from Middlebury College and her M.D. from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. She trained in pediatrics at Johns Hopkins, in neuropathology at Massachusetts General Hospital, and in adult and child neurology in the Longwood Neurology Training Program and at Boston Children's Hospital. Following her residencies, she was a research fellow with Louis Kunkel, Ph.D., and later Alan Beggs, Ph.D., in the Division of Genetics at Children's prior to establishing her own research lab in 1997. Her work has defined the human congenital cranial dysinnervation disorders and has been recognized by high-profile publications and by receipt of multiple honors, including the E. Mead Johnson Award for Research in Pediatrics from the Society for Pediatric Research, the Sidney Carter Award in Child Neurology from the American Academy of Neurology, a Research Award for Vision from the Alcon Institute, and election to the National Academy of Medicine. In addition to her research, Dr. Engle continues to care for patients, primarily consulting for children and adults with rare eye and facial movement disorders and other cranial nerve disorders. She works with Arthur Lee, MD, PhD and is interested in applying machine learning approaches to nominate pathogenic coding and non-coding mutations from clinical research sequencing data. Genetic Research Program Manager & Research Specialist II<\/span><\/strong><\/div>\n
<\/span><\/strong><\/div>\nBrenda joined the Engle Lab in 2015 and is responsible for managing Congenital Cranial Dysinnervation Disorders (CCDD) human subjects study protocols and the CCDD multidisciplinary clinic. She coordinates communications between the lab, study participants, referring providers and research collaborators in the US and abroad and enrolls families into our research studies. Through the CCDD clinic, she provides genetic counseling for pediatric and adult patients affected by cranial nerve disorders, as well as their families.<\/o:p>\n\nBrenda received her BA in Biology from Williams College and her MS in Genetic Counseling from Brandeis University. She is Board Certified by the American Board of Genetic Counseling and is a Licensed Genetic Counselor in the State of Massachusetts. She works closely with both the clinical neurogenetics and basic neuroscience research groups in the lab. \n\nJulie is a postdoctoral research fellow and has been with the Engle lab since 2018. She received her undergraduate degree in Molecular and Cell Biology from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2010.  She then worked for two years in the laboratory of Dr. Pedro Jose at Children\u2019s National Medical Center (Washington, DC) and the University of Maryland School of Medicine (Baltimore, MD), where she researched mechanisms of blood pressure regulation. In 2017, she obtained her PhD in Human Genetics at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine (Baltimore, MD) under the guidance of Dr. David Valle, where she identified novel candidate genes for unexplained Mendelian disorders through whole exome sequencing at the Baylor-Hopkins Center for Mendelian Genomics and performed mechanistic studies of a heritable bone dysplasia with retinopathy. Postdoctoral Research Fellow<\/span><\/strong><\/div>\nDr. Arthur Lee joined the Engle Lab in 2017 after earning his MD\/PhD at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis with a PhD in Computational and Systems Biology. He conducted his doctoral research in the lab of Don Conrad, PhD, studying the impact of rare copy-number variants on common infertility in humans and mice.<\/span>\n\nIn the Engle Lab, Dr. Arthur Lee\u2019s current work focuses on two major areas:\n

  1. Identifying pathogenic structural variants (e.g., deletions, duplications, inversions, etc.) from patient whole genome sequencing data.<\/li>\n \t
  2. Generating and analyzing single cell functional genomics data (e.g., scATAC-seq) for rare cell subtypes that are sparsely represented in public databases.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\nUltimately, he hopes to integrate these layers of next-generation sequencing data as a powerful lever into rare, non-coding disease biology.     Postdoctoral Research Fellow<\/strong><\/div>\n

    Originally from Ann Arbor, Michigan, Dr. Suresh Mohan graduated from the University of Michigan with dual concentrations in music and cell and molecular biology. When not pursuing a cappella fame, he studied protein-trafficking in macrophage phagocytosis using FRET (fluorescence resonance energy transfer) imaging and live-cell microscopy. He went on to complete his medical training at the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University and completed a research fellowship at the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders investigating novel targeted chemotherapeutics for head and neck squamous cell carcinoma.<\/p>\nDr. Mohan completed his general surgery internship at Brigham and Women\u2019s Hospital and is currently pursuing the seven-year research track in the Harvard Otolaryngology Residency program. His research is focused on Schwann cell plasticity and the peripheral nerve injury response with single-cell RNA sequencing of rodent and human neural tissues. This work is conducted in collaboration with Drs.     Laboratory Research Assistant<\/strong><\/div>\nPaola joined the Engle Lab <\/span>in 2018 after graduating from the University of Puerto Rico at Mayag\u00fcez with a BS in Biological Sciences. She is modeling CCDD candidate disease genes in motor neurons derived from mouse ES cells and zebrafish, as well as establishing zebrafish reporter lines for high-resolution imaging of the cranial nerves using expansion microscopy. Previously, Paola spent two summers in the lab as an undergraduate researcher through the HHMI EXROP and Capstone Programs. Her long-term career goal is to become a physician-scientist; her interests include pediatrics, ophthalmology, neurology, genetics, cell biology, neurodevelopment, molecular genetics, and imaging technologies.<\/span>\n\n[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=\"3.27.4\"]\n

    \n\nMatt joined the Engle lab in 2014 while completing his Neuropathology Fellowship at Brigham and Women\u2019s and Boston Children\u2019s Hospitals. He received his BS in Chemistry at the University of Virginia, where he studied inner ear hair cell regeneration with Jeffrey Corwin, PhD. Matt earned his MD\/PhD in Developmental Biology in the lab of Huda Zoghbi, MD at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, TX. There he mapped the fate of Atoh1<\/em>-dependent brainstem neurons contributing to shared neural networks vital for balance, proprioception, hearing, and arousal.\n\nIn the Engle lab, Matt is using a combination of single cell and in situ transcriptomics, as well as whole organism tissue clearing and imaging to identify and visualize motor neuron subpopulations and their differential connectivity in health and disease.     \n\nAlan received his BA in Molecular Biology and Biochemistry from Rutgers University and his PhD in Cell and Developmental Biology from Harvard University. He focused his dissertation work in the laboratory of John Flanagan on identifying ligands for neuronal receptor protein tyrosine phosphatases that coordinate the assembly of the neuromuscular junction during development.
